Manohar Lal Khattar, a former RSS pracharak turned BJP leader, will assume office as Haryana Chief Minister on October 26. The 47 MLAs of the State BJP have unanimously elected Khattar as their leader. The things that favoured Khattar are his organisational skills and his proximity to PM Narendra Modi.
The BJP, which has won power by consolidating anti-Jat votes, has chosen a non-Jat for the top post. This is to ensure that the party retains its popularity among other groups like Dalits, OBCs and Brahmins. Khattar’s toughest job will be to manage the Opposition led by the Indian National Lok Dal and the Congress as both enjoy a strong base among the Jats, who constitute 27 % of Haryana’s population.
