The newly appointed chief minister of Tamil Nadu O Panneerselvam has taken the oath of office. He is an old Jaylalitha loyalist, who had filled in for her earlier too while she remote-controlled the government from the jail. Tears rolled down many ministers’s faces as they came to the podium for the oath of office and secrecy. The 66-year old AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa or "Amma" or "Puratchi Thalaivi" as she is fondly called — is confined in a Bangalore prison. She has alraedy filed an appeal for a bail as well agaisnt her conviction through her lawyer. The appeal is likely to be heard very soon by a vacation bench. Though unrest and violence on the streets has faded a little, the tension after Jayalalithaa’s conviction and imprisonment is still fresh.
Earlier, a special Bangalore court had convicted and sentenced Jayalalithaa to 4 years jail and slapped a Rs 100-crore fine in the 18 year old disproportionate assets case. The case pertains to the recovery of valuables worth Rs. 66 Crore while she was drawing a token salary of Rs. 1 as Chief Minster in those days. The booty included more than 1000 sarees, 700 pairs of shoes, 100 watches and gold ornaments too.
