The Congress and the Samajwadi Party, which were defeated badly in the Lok Sabha elections, bounced back on in the assembly bypolls in Rajasthan and UP. In a surprise feat, the BJP will have an MLA in the West Bengal assembly. In Gujarat, the BJP again bagged the Vadodara Lok Sabha seat vacated by PM Narendra Modi after he also won from the Varanasi constituency. The Congress wrested three seats from the BJP, which retained six seats in Gujarat.
The Congress' good show in post-Modi Gujarat bodes well for the party. In Andhra Pradesh, the ruling Telugu Desam Party retained Nandigama assembly seat, while the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) too retained Medak Lok Sabha seat in Telangana. In West Bengal, after a 15-year gap, the BJP will have an MLA as Shamik Bhattacharya has won the Basirhat (South) seat, while the ruling Trinamool retained the Chowringhee seat.
