In a fitting climax to an extraordinary election, the Narendra Modi-led NDA has virtually stormed to power with its rock-solid 334 seat victory. Proving the poll pundits more than just right, the BJP is either leading or has won in 283 constituencies, way beyond the required 272 seats.

The results have been phenomenal not only in giving the BJP its first clear victory but also in decimating the Congress to its lowest mark. At the time of writing this, the Congress had managed a lead in 47 seats only. It is the first time in 30 years ever since the Congress’s landslide victory in 1984 that any single party has got such a complete majority in Lok Sabha. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), a rainbow coalition of 25 parties, is leading in 334 LS constituencies seats while the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was leading in just about 59 seats till 8 PM.

The Modi wave swept across the barriers of caste and region, getting the party an unexpected jump in vote share in the eastern and southern regions. But its most spectacular performance was in UP where its general secretary Amit Shah took the party to a whopping 73/ 80 seats and reduced the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to zero and the ruling Samajwadi Party to just 5 seats. It has been a total sweep in Gujarat for the BJP, which has cornered all 26 seats in the state. Narender Modi, who had fought from both Varanasi and Vadodra, won the Vadodra seat by a record 5.7 lakh vote margin. Rahul Gandhi has just managed to save his Amethi seat but many party stalwarts had to bite the dust e.g. Kapil Sibal, Kamal Nath, Sushil Kumar Shinde etc.

The Congress could not open its account in seven states and in no other state, its tally could cross the double digit mark. The debutant Aam Aadmi Party, which had emerged as a surprise killer in Delhi elections, has got just 4 seats this time, all of them in Panjab. Arvind Kejriwal, Kumar Vishwas, Shazia Illmi, Rakhi Birla, Ashutosh and Yogendra Yadav -- all have lost their respective seats.
