The Thai government has declared a 60-day emergency to prevent escalation of protests aimed at forcing PM Yingluck Shinawatra out of power. The order gives security agencies the power to impose curfew, detain suspects without charge, censor media, ban political gatherings of more than five people and declare parts of the capital out of reach.

The protests, now in their third month, have closed off parts of Bangkok after sporadic violence. The protests pit the middle class and the royalist establishment against the poorer supporters of Yingluck and her brother, ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, toppled by the military in 2006.
