Former Bihar CM and RJD president Lalu Prasad has been sentenced to 5 years jail, along with a fine of Rs 25 lakh in the Rs 950 crore fodder scam by the CBI court. Another former Bihar CM Jagannath Mishra has been sentenced to 4 years jail along with a fine of Rs 2 lakh.
Lalu is currently lodged in Birsa Munda Central Jail. The 65-year-old has also been disqualified as an MP and is barred from contesting elections for 6 years. During the arguments in the court, Lalu's counsel pleaded leniency underlining his seniority, medical condition and performance as a Railway Minsiter but none of it cut any ice with the Judge. The CBI demanded maximum punishment 'which would act as deterrent in similar cases'. The 17-year-old case involves fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 37.7 Cr from the Chaibasa treasury.
