Congress Rajya Sabha MP Rasheed Masood has been sentenced to 4 years in jail in a medical seat scam. The MP had been convicted of cheating, forgery and corruption in an MBBS seat scam. Masood was taken into custody and taken to the Tihar jail. The defence had pleaded for leniency citing Masood's old age and health.
The Rajya Sabha secretariat is awaiting official intimation on Masood's sentencing and is also consulting the Law Ministry. The Lok Sabha secretariat has asked the Law Ministry on Lalu Prasad but is yet to receive a response. Two other accused - former IPS officer Gurdayal Singh and former IAS officer AK Roy - have also been sentenced to four years in jail while 7 students involved in the scam got one year each in jail.
Masood has been held guilty of nominating undeserving candidates to MBBS seats allocated to Tripura from the central pool. The fraud was carried out during Masood's tenure as MoS Health in 1990-91. As per CBI, Singh and Masood hatched a criminal conspiracy to nominate undeserving candidates for medical seats.
