In a watershed ruling, the Supreme Court has decreed that sitting MPs and MLAs, against whom the pending court cases result in conviction for 2 years and more, will be disqualified immediately. In its attempt to clean up the stables of Indian politics, the Court has corrected an anmoly in the Representation of People's Act, 1952 by which,  earlier, only those convicted before elections were debarred from becoming legislators.

Indian politics had been craving for such a game-changer for quite some time as most leaders and activists of these parties had criminal charges against them.
