The Supreme Court has quashed the rape charges against filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar levelled by Preeti Jian, an aspiring model and actress. Madhur had approached the Supreme Court arguing that proper procedure was not followed during investigations and only the victim’s statements were taken in the court.
In July 2004, one Preeti Jain had lodged a complaint saying that Madhur had raped her several times between 1999 and 2004 under the pretext of marrying her and casting her as lead actress in his movies. A Mumbai court had, in 2011, found the complaint to be substantial enough to proceed against Madhur, and directed him to face a trial. However, the court had, in November last year granted anticipatory bail to the Bollywood filmmaker. Preeti also told court that she was not interested in pursuing the case further as now it was quite old.
