Renowned comedian and satirist Jaspal Bhatti died in a tragic road accident near Jalandhar this early morning at 3 a.m. Bhatti was going to Nakodar from Bhatinda for the promotion of his film 'Power Cut', due for release this Friday.
The accident happened near Shahkot as his car rammed into a tree. Bhatti's son Jasraj and the heroine of his new film, Surilie Gautam got injured and are in hospital.
The news brought with it a huge wave of shock for the film industry.His demise is a huge loss for the Panjabi film industry as well as Bollywood to which he had given several successful movies like “Mahaul Theek Hai, “Jaanam Samjha Karo”, "Fanaa" and “Aa Ab Laut Chalen”. His death has creates a big vacuum, almost impossible to fill.
Jaspal Bhatti had started off as an engineer with the Panjab State Electricity Board and alongside, created the cartoon series Laugh It Off and Deft Definitions for The Tribune. He was a pioneer of socially meaningful and relevant comedy and his hugely successful “Rang Vich Bhang” on Jalandhar Doordarshan, 'Flop Show' and 'Ulta Pulta' were the earliest socio-political satires. His half-mocking, half-serious face with his light, mischievous way of satirical commentary on the prevailing socio-economic issues made him very popular. Bhatti is survived by his wife Savita Bhatti, a son and a daughter. RIP
