Ebola-infected Sierra Leone has begun isolating more than a million people in the largest such exercise in the deadly Ebola outbreak. Port Loko and Bombali are to be closed off effectively sealing in around 12 lakh people. With Kenema and Kailahun already under isolation, more than a third of the 60-lakh population is unable to move freely.
The deadliest Ebola epidemic has infected more than 6,200 people in west Africa, killing nearly half of them, say the latest WHO figures. The virus can kill its victims within days with high fever, severe muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and unstoppable internal and external bleeding. In Sierra Leone, Ebola has infected 1,940 people, killing 593, but the WHO has warned of more cases in the coming months without an urgent response. Prez Obama, who has sent 3,000 troops to west Africa to aid local health workers, has urged other nations to support the international effort.
