In a historic order, the Supreme Court has recognized the eunuchs (kinnar) as the 'third gender'. It is a turning point in the history of transgender communities and other sexual minorities in India. From now on, apart from the columns on official documents for male and female, there would be another column for trangenders. The court has also asked the goernment to make reservations for the transgenders in jobs and education to make their integration into the mainstream a reality.
The SC order, reaffirming that one's gender identity is a right to be determined only by that person, has now given three options. For a person filling up a form, the choice may be any of the three genders (male / female/ the third gender).
Currently, many sexual minorities are forced into sex work and denied dignity in their families and workplaces. The order would eventually improve the social and economic status of the LGBTs (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) in India.
The decision to recognize transgenders officially would also benefit lesbians, homosexuals and bisexuals as it clarifies that not only the gender identity but the sexual orientation will also be protected. The order could help dismantle the walls of social, legal and gender discrimination, and the sexual minorities would get greater acceptance. While most private companies remain indifferent to their cause, IBM, Goldman Sachs and Google have tried to address the needs of LGBT employees to make the workplace more inclusive.
