The Gorakhdham Express rammed into a goods train at Chureb station between Basti and Gorakhpur in UP this morning, killing 40 passengers and injuring 100. Initial reports say that both the trains came on a single track due to a signal error due to which three general coaches of the Gorakhdham Express were crushed while six others were derailed. Six coaches of the train later rammed into a stationary goods train on an adjoining track at the station.
The Railways has ordered an inquiry into the mishap and has also announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each to the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured. A sum of Rs 10,000 will be given to those who have sustained simple injuries.
