In a major setback to the Indian Air Force, a C-130J Super Hercules Special Operations transport aircraft crashed near Gwalior, killing all five crew members on board, incluind four officers. The aircraft crashed 115 km west of the Gwalior air base. The aircraft had taken off from Agra at 10 AM for a routine training mission. A Court of Inquiry has been instituted to probe the accident.
India had recently inducted 6 C-130J Super Hercules aircraft bought from the US for Re. 6,000 crore ($1.1 billion) four years ago. The home base of the 77 squadron ‘Veiled Vipers’ operating the aircraft is Hindan, Ghaziabad. The aircraft have helped boost the IAF capability to airlift troops closer to the border in emergency.
