The Singapore government has started deporting 52 Indian nationals involved in the recent rioting in the Little India area. This incident is dubbed as the city state's worst street violence in 40 years. The riot was triggered by a fatal accident involving an Indian. The 53 had allegedly obstructed the police or failed to obey it to disperse during the riot, in which officers, including policemen were injured and 25 police and Civil Defence Force vehicles damaged.
They were guilty of threatening the safety and security of Singapore, the conditions that permit the government to deport them from entering Singapore in future under the Immigration Act. Twenty-eight Indian nationals are being tried in the case, the hearings for which are on.
Under the Immigration Act, the government can ask an individual to leave Singapore once it it proved that he had acted contrary to Singapore's interests or against public security or safety.
